It's fantastic, he scores goals, ' Ferdinand told BT Sport.

The 27-year-old is certainly the best player we have at United and was brilliant in our 2-1 win over Bournemouth on Saturday.

United struggled in the opening 45 minutes but Anthony Martial put the visitors back on level terms just before the break.

In addition, Martial's interplay with Shaw was impressive, at times, especially in the final phase of the game as United pinned down Bournemouth in their own half.

"So when the team is really defensive and you have a more defensive mind then you base the work on that, then the team doesn't develop enough in other areas but the team managed to get results based on that".

United have endured a poor start to the season and they were outplayed in the first half, fortunate to reach half-time all square after Anthony Martial cancelled out Callum Wilson's opener.

"So Lukaku has not come and we chose to start with Alexis (Sanchez)".

Sanchez's recall - his first start in the Premier League for more than a month - was Mourinho's only change to the team that beat Everton with Juan Mata and Fred both keeping their places.

Mourinho believes eighth-placed United, who are unbeaten in their last three league games, will improve and close the gap on their rivals over the next couple of months.

In the second half Mourinho's men upped the tempo and after substitutes, Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford entered proceedings.

"Because the approach was much more defensive and with a much more defensive approach you can hide better your weaknesses", said Mourinho. When we are in control we have no problems, when the opponent is in control I think the team has problems.

The Daily Mirror says that one of the reasons United's aims are being hampered is that agents are using Sanchez's salary as a guide during negotiations. We knew the second half was going to be a different game.

"But I do think in a young player's development... you've seen it with top players with Wayne Rooney on the left wing at times for Man Utd, [Cristiano] Ronaldo on the wing and up front".
