Vardy said the last week had been the hardest of his life but the players, who will travel by road to Cardiff, were keen to play on Saturday.

"There are a lot of exhausted people in there now but I am proud of this team and the club, the way everyone has handled themselves has been unbelievable". City plays on Sunday against Southampton at home.

It was United's third victory in their last four Premier League games, but boss Jose Mourinho was furious with his side's latest sloppy start.

With crucial Champions League ties against PSV Eindhoven and Inter Milan in November, as well as London derbies against Crystal Palace and Chelsea, Pochettino was forced to do without Eric Dier who was declared unfit, while Mousa Dembele limped off in the first half.

Tottenham, in fourth position, moved within three points of Liverpool despite conceding two second-half penalties in a 3-2 win at Wolverhampton.

Newcastle earned their first league win this season with a 1-0 success against Watford at St James' Park.

Leicester are 12th in the table on 13 points, while promoted Cardiff are 17th with five points from 10 games.

Demarai Gray scored Leicester's goal, and the winger revealed a shirt that contained the words "For Khun Vichai" after scoring in the 55th minute.

Where many suspect the referee Lee Probert may have demonstrated some leniency given the impetus behind Gray's decision, viewers were amazed that no exception was made.

Jonathan Head, the BBC's South East Asia correspondent, said: "This is a more formal atmosphere than the players will have experienced during the moving tributes to Mr Vichai in Britain".

"We are aware of petitions seeking this type of change as well as for a statue at the club and will discuss all these wishes with the Srivaddhanaprabha family and the football club".

"It was a hard game, they did their best", said Puel.

"It has not been an easy week, we had to try and hold our emotions in today and do the best we can".

"We're thinking about his family, we're all hurting, but I can't imagine what they're going through".

Gray's goal prompted an emotional response from his team-mates and the away section before Probert followed protocol at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Marcus Rashford scored a stoppage-time victor as Manchester United came from behind to win 2-1 at Bournemouth.
