At least 10 to 15 people also were injured, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said.

Teylor Whittler described the scene as gunfire erupted. "It's unfair, it's not right, and I'm just so sorry for the families who are hurt and who lost their lives".

"He said, 'Hon, I got to go, I love you".

"Ongoing active shooter incident reported at Borderline", the Ventura County Fire Department tweeted.

Prior to heading to the scene, Helus talked to his wife, as he does several times during his shift, Dean said. On his "about" page, Helus wrote that that he'd been a firearms instructor for more than 25 years, and had previously worked with the basic and advanced SWAT schools. Kuredjian said he could not confirm whether any of those shot were dead or the severity of their injuries.

Deputies say many people fled the bar after shots rang out. "That was the last thing I said".

These are the words of actress Tamera Mowry-Housley and her husband Adam Housely who confirmed that their niece Alaina Housley, 18, was one of those killed in the shooting.

Officials say the suspect, who has not been identified, was found dead inside.

The 23-year-old was a recent graduate of California Lutheran University, and "heroically saved lives in the incident", according to the university's president, Chris Kimball.

Taylor Von Molt, 21, told CNN that the shooter was wearing what looked like a bandana and a hoodie and was a burly man.

Sarah Rose DeSon told ABC's "Good Morning America" that she saw the shooter draw his gun.

"He was totally committed, he gave his all", Sheriff Dean continued, "and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero". "I dropped to the floor", she said.

An unknown number of people were also wounded during the attack at the Borderline Bar and Grill, a Country & Western venue in the Los Angeles suburb of Thousand Oaks where a crowd had gathered for a night of dancing, drinking and eating.

People watch police responding to the shooting on November 7, 2018.

The Associated Press is reporting the gunman was 29-years-old and armed with a.45-calibre handgun.

"This is a very close-knit community", Kuredjian said, adding that Thousand Oaks - north and west of Los Angeles - is a "pro-law-enforcement community" as well.
