Arsenal qualified for the Europa League knockout stage with a 0-0 draw against Sporting at The Emirates, although striker Danny Welbeck was carried off on a stretcher in the first half with a serious ankle injury. "A further update will be issued over the next 72 hours", the Arsenal update said.

Welbeck has already suffered two long-term knee injuries since joining Arsenal in 2014, missing a majority of the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.

That was the last of the meaningful action as Arsenal failed to score for just the second time under Emery - but it will be Welbeck's injury that dominates the fall-out. A good lad and a good friend. His injury also affected the mentality of the players as they could see it was a big injury. "He can come back strong".

He deservedly received a call up to Gareth Southgate's England squad this afternoon but after what looks like a serious injury against Sporting CP tonight, it looks like he will be out for a long spell.

The incident knocked the wind out of Arsenal's sails but Welbeck's replacement Aubameyang hit the crossbar as the visitors offered very little in terms of an attacking threat. Here is the Gunners' predicted starting XI, with Unai Emery getting close to his best team.

"Danny Welbeck has suffered a horrendous injury, it looks like a suspected broken ankle and he could be out for the rest of the season, plus his contract is up as well". "I think the players were concentrated for the match but when we finished the first thing was to ask about him".
