Sessions 'confident' Mueller probe will be handled 'appropriately'

A few members of Congress have discussed reviving proposed legislation soon that would enshrine protections for Mueller in law. Sen.

Sessions sent the message to Justice Department workers on Thursday, a day after he resigned at Trump's request.

Organizers claimed similar events were held in hundreds of places across the country.

Recall, November 7, US attorney General Jeff sessions has resigned at the request of President Donald trump.

"The president has said repeatedly he's not going to dismiss the Mueller investigation", McConnell told reporters at Kentucky's Capitol in Frankfort.

Senate Democrats were considering suing Trump, the sources said, on the grounds that, in naming Whitaker, the president ignored a statutory line of succession at the Justice Department and deprived senators of their constitutional "advice and consent" role on some presidential appointments.

Since stepping into his new role on Wednesday, Whitaker has faced questions - principally from Democrats - about whether he should recuse from the Russian Federation investigation, given that he has written opinion pieces in the past about the investigation, and is a friend and political ally of a witness. A Justice Department spokeswoman did not respond to questions about the number of times Whitaker has met with and briefed Trump.

In a CNN op-ed a year ago, Whitaker wrote, "Mueller has come up to a red line in the Russian Federation 2016 election-meddling investigation that he is dangerously close to crossing". "The matter of Whitaker is controversial and subject to dispute, but I think Rosenstein's recusal is not a matter of dispute....

I am not aware of any precedent for the appointment of an official who has not been confirmed by the Senate to serve as acting Attorney General", Schumer wrote in the letter.

"When Trump complained about the [Robert] Mueller investigation, Whitaker often smiled knowingly and nodded in assent", the official said.

"Rosenstein is much, much, much more subject to recusal than Whitaker", Dershowitz told Fox News' "America's Newsroom".

To Trump's great anger, on March 2, 2017 Sessions recused himself from involvement in and oversight of the nascent Russia collusion investigation because of his own Russian contacts during the 2016 campaign. Chris Coons, D-Del., McConnell said "it's not going to come up because it's not necessary". As attorney general, Sessions will primarily be remembered for the persecution of immigrants, most notably the separation of immigrant children from their parents and their imprisonment in detention camps built in the desert.

Whitaker's selection by Trump as acting attorney general drew sharp criticism from Democratic lawmakers, who described it as an attempt by the president to undermine and possibly end Mueller's investigation.

As attorney general, and earlier as White House counsel, he faced criticism for drafting controversial rules for military war tribunals, seeking to limit the legal rights of detainees at the US prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

He also said he had not spoken with Whitaker about Mueller's probe.

"Sessions did not do the thing he could have done to better protect Rosenstein, and through Rosenstein, the Mueller investigation", Vladeck said. CNN also reported that Whitaker has visited the White House a dozen or more times since becoming Sessions' chief of staff and that he had a good relationship with the president.

Sessions' chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, has been named as acting attorney general.

A permanent replacement for Sessions must be confirmed by the Senate, which Trump's Republicans will continue to control as a result of Tuesday's midterm elections.
