Other cities may also receive major sites, some of the people said.

After announcing that it was looking a new location for its second headquarters in September 2017, Amazon received applications from 238 cities.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said the Queens community has responded with "outrage" to the news Amazon HQ2 will be partially located in Long Island City.

Hiring at both the new headquarters will begin in 2019.

The two areas already have relatively low unemployment rates, and Fitch Ratings has noted that even a full HQ2 represented only 1.5 percent of the Washington area and 0.5 percent of the NY area's labor force.

"Crystal City had a negative connotation for 30 years", Gast said.

The search for an HQ2 location has spanned more than a year and dozens of cities were in the running, including the Triangle.

According to an Amazon press release, one half of the so-called HQ2 will soon land in Long Island City, where it will purportedly create 25,000 jobs in exchange for a cool $1.5 billion in state incentives.

"We are witness to a cynical game in which Amazon duped NY into offering unprecedented amounts of tax dollars to one of the wealthiest companies on Earth for a promise of jobs that would represent less than 3% of the jobs typically created in our city over a 10 year period", the politicians added.

The company had originally said it would spend more than US$5 billion and add up to 50,000 workers at one location. Plaxall has pushed that the 15-ace site, known as the Anable Basin, be rezoned, which could also clear the way for almost 5,000 housing units, of which 25 percent would be made affordable. The cities beat out 236 other proposals.

The company estimates that its investments in Seattle from 2010 to 2016 added $38 billion to the city's economy.

Amazon narrowed the list to 20 cities in January, and in recent weeks, smaller locations appeared to fall out of the running. This website is not intended for users located within the European Economic Area. "If we are going to put a million dollars into something we certainly want to see 100-million dollars in return in terms of tax revenue, so I think that is the way to look at it in terms of a subsidy or squeezing something out", Stringer said. Bernie Sanders, who have called out the company over issues like wages. "It was also a platform for cities to promote themselves to a global audience".

Toronto may not have won the right to host Amazon's next corporate headquarters, but Mayor John Tory says taking part in the competition nonetheless represented a victory.

The company's push to build a second home base highlights how massively Amazon has expanded during its 20-plus year history.

"There are places in the middle of the country that are thriving, and just because Amazon didn't pick them doesn't signal that the heartland is doomed", said Joseph Parilla, a fellow at the Brookings Institution's Metropolitan Policy Program.
