The John Lewis Christmas ad 2018

After weeks of speculation, Sir Elton John has been confirmed as the star of John Lewis' festive visual offering.

Then you'll see a little boy running down the stairs on Christmas morning and tearing open the wrapping paper to find a present that'll change his life: a piano. "I think emotionally he is thinking about the journey he's been on as an artist".

The John Lewis advert takes us back through Elton John's career.

The advert begins and ends with John playing "Your Song" in what is supposed to be his living room.

The advert will first air on TV tonight at 9.15pm during Dark Heart on ITV, but keen-eared Coronation St and This Morning viewers may have noticed the themes were played exclusively on piano on Wednesday to tease the advert.

But the message we ultimately take away from this ad is that the joy of playing a musical instrument isn't just a Christmas gimmick - it will stay with you for life.

"In our view, the way that TV works most powerfully is by telling a story".

Just like previous years, the advert tells a detailed story of the gift of giving with the focus being on a young boy and how one gift altered the course of his life. "It could nearly be anyone".

"The John Lewis Christmas campaign is an iconic part of Christmas now and has had so many warm memories and associations for us, with all of our Christmases, so to be asked to be part of that was a huge honour".

Elton John's latest project, an advertisement for United Kingdom department store John Lewis, is playing heart-strings as well as he plays the piano. He also nervously plays at a school recital.

Besides, while the annual John Lewis Christmas ads are a beloved holiday tradition, they're still ads.

"Any cabinet ministers intending to resign tomorrow should do so knowing that no one will notice because the John Lewis Christmas advert is being released", wrote Charlie Peters. A portion of Elton John's undisclosed fee has been donated to the Elton John Charitable Trust.
