A Winfrey spokeswoman on Monday issued a statement saying Lee died at her Milwaukee home on November 22.

No other details were given. Lee is survived by Winfrey and daughter Patricia Amanda Faye Lee, who she gave up for adoption at birth. Oprah Winfrey's mum is dead. Sources said that "even though she didn't have the best relationship with Vernita, her passing was really devastating for her". "I was asking the question. what is a mother?"

According to TMZ, which first reported the news, she and Oprah reportedly had a hard relationship as the TV mogul was raised by her maternal grandmother until the age of six while Lee worked as a housemaid in Milwaukee. When she moved in with her mother, she says Lee was a total stranger to her.

She is survived by her daughters, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

While the private funeral has already been held, the family have requested donations be made to Feeding America in her name.
