In Michael Cohen's explosive testimony in Manhattan federal court on Thursday, he admitted he had been in contact with a Kremlin official in 2016, and had lied to be consistent with Trump's "political messaging" and "to be loyal".

Trump said he ultimately decided not to pursue a real estate project in Russian Federation, but it isn't clear precisely how discussions ended over the notional Trump Tower in Moscow.

Michael Cohen walks out of federal court on Thursday in NY.

"Michael Cohen is lying and he's trying to get a reduced sentence", Trump said.

Trump told reporters outside the White House he had decided not to build the building in Moscow, although he did not specify when he decided against pursuing the project.

Cohen said he downplayed his interactions with Russian Federation about the potential project and made false statements about the negotiations, according to the report.

Oh, and as journalists are noting, if Cohen is guilty of lying to Congress, that means Don Jr.is too.

"With each indictment and each guilty plea, we learn more about the president's connections to Russian Federation in the midst of Russia's efforts to interfere in the 2016 election", said Virginia Sen.

"Trump, however, claimed that what Cohen pleaded guilty to was actually "not a crime" and maligned him for "[making] up stories in order to get a 'deal.'".

In a statement, Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani said Trump was asked about the Moscow development in written questions from the Mueller team.

Oh, and this guilty plea also confirms that the Russian President has had blackmail material over the President of the United States this whole time.and not just the pee tape.

Promising to "put family and country first", Cohen has agreed to fully cooperate with prosecutors.

In August, Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations and tax evasion. Democrats have said they will release the transcripts publicly when they assume control of the committee in January.

Meanwhile, Manafort's lawyers have been briefing Mr Trump's attorneys in recent months on what their client has told investigators, an unusual arrangement for a government co-operator and one that raises the prospect that Manafort could be angling for a pardon.

Nadler did not go so far as to say the president could face impeachment, but rather that the issue should be revisited if a congressional investigation were to uncover further troubling evidence. But the project ultimately fizzled, Cohen told the committee, and Trump wasn't involved in the decision to abandon the project.

Trump has sought to distance himself from Cohen despite their long association.

Cohen had also disclosed that Trump was personally aware of the deal, signing a letter of intent and discussing it with Cohen on two other occasions. He said sentencing in the case is scheduled for December 12.

Trump has called it a witch hunt.
