As defending World Series champions and also the reigning Dubai Cup holders‚ the Blitzboks flexed their muscles initially but ill-discipline cost them in the day's final match.

Australia will meet Argentina in the quarter-finals on Saturday at 6:44pm AEDT while New Zealand will face Scotland, red-hot Fiji will take on the United States of America and reigning world series champions South Africa come up against England.

"It was really unfortunate [the injuries] but we knew that we had to get our heads down and start working".

A converted try to Ngarohi McGarvey Black finished the scoring, as the New Zealand men followed their women's team from a day before in becoming champions - though the men's last Dubai title was nine years ago.

Moments before, U.S. knocked on and the ball went out. Team USA finished sixth a year ago. The Canadian women have won 10 of 12 matches this season, losing only to the Black Ferns.

Greenshields collected her three in Canada's 38-7 opening win over Fiji.

The Fijians scored a try in the sudden death extra-time period to win 24-19.

Far tougher was the semi-finals, where New Zealand scored early against England, led 7-5 at half-time, then spent the entire second half on defence, as England remarkably did everything but score.

New Zealand are in a pool alongside Ireland, Russia and Kenya, while the third and final pool features Canada, France, Spain and Fiji.

Meanwhile, New Zealand's women's team secured their fourth title at the Dubai tournament after beating Canada 26-14 in the final on Friday (Saturday NZT).

The first half was a stop-start affair with the Blitzboks just edging Scotland 5-0 at the break.

Semifinal: New Zealand 7 (Tone Ng Shiu try; Andrew Knewstubb con) England 5 (Tom Bowen try). The All Blacks pushed ahead, however, after a lineout to make it 14-5 and then surged ahead with a try in the waning minutes to seal the victory.
