Jeep Gladiator: The Jeep Wrangler Pickup You've Always Wanted | Edmunds

There is no mistaking that this is a Jeep pickup, which is exactly what designers had to do, but is the Gladiator meant to be more Jeep than pickup truck or more pickup than Jeep? 'It's been two years of a labour of love for us, ' added John Mrozowski, the Gladiator's line exec. Prior to the new Jeep Gladiator, Jeep last offered a pickup truck in 1992 when it discontinued the boxy Cherokee-based Comanche.

Power will come from Jeep's 3.6 litre Pentastar V6 (212kW/353Nm) which will be offered with an eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual, and a 3.0 litre V6 turbo diesel (194kW/599Nm) will be available with the automatic. According to Jalopnik that makes the Gladiator the first pickup to go on sale in the U.S. with a removable roof since the 1991 Dodge Dakota Sport, although you can choose not to spec it - or the folding screen.

After a year or more of rumors, speculation and innuendo, the Jeep pickup - dubbed the Gladiator - broke cover this week at the LA Auto Show as a 2020 model, ... and it's everything we expected and more. We can not wait to see all of the wonderful builds in the near future. "But, by design and by plan, you can't look at this and not think Wrangler". The original Gladiator resembled the Jeep Wagoneer, one of the most influential vehicles to debut in the past half century. Mopar kit like door bars, lift kits and a glut of "lifestyle" mods like bike racks and suchlike.

On the inside, the Gladiator comes with a 7.0-inch LED information display and an 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen with smartphone connectivity. Other standard kit includes keyless start, a digital instrument screen housed between two dials and climate control. The Gladiator Rubicon can be had with a forward-facing off-road camera, beaming a picture back from the Gladiator's grille, to show the road straight ahead.

It's still a proper off-roader, right?

The new Jeep Gladiator shares its platform (body-on-frame) and design bits with the Wrangler SUV. It's packed full of aluminum body panels to decrease weight, but it maintains a ridged body-on-frame construction.

Two storage nets on the cab-back wall provide additional secure storage space to complement the array of storage solutions found throughout the cabin.

Perhaps even bigger news in the powertrain department is the addition of an Off-Road Plus setting for the driver-adjustable four-wheel-drive system. That uses heavy-duty third-gen Dana 44 front and rear axles with a "4LO" ratio of 4:1.

The Sport, Overland and Rubicon have all been "Trail Rated" by the company, and feature a 43.6 degree approach angle, 20.3 degree breakover angle, and 26 degree departure angle.

Its wading depth is 762mm, 162mm more than the latest Range Rover Evoque. The 2020 Gladiator Rubicon, meanwhile, has a Rock-Trac 4×4 system.

I'll take one in black. Price and specifications for Australia haven't been confirmed as the Gladiator isn't likely to hit our shores until 2020. It will go on sale there next year, although it is not known if there are any plans for it to come to Europe yet.
