Barcelona forward Messi - a five-time victor of the Balon d'Or, awarded to the world's best player - is not even rated in the top three of football's greatest players by the 78-year-old Brazilian.

The 78-year-old has always been considered one of the greatest to ever play the game, and thus his words naturally carry great weight in the footballing world.

There are many who consider Messi to be the finest player to have ever played the game, with a five-time Ballon d'Or victor boasting countless records and a stunning strike rate.

"How can you compare?" he told Folha de Sao Paulo.

He continued: "How can you compare?"

Nevertheless, this was only good enough to give him a fifth-place finish in this week's Ballon d'Or vote, as Real Madrid's Luka Modric walked off with the main prize - the first time since 2006 Messi has not attained a podium place at the prestigious gala.

Mbappe has been compared to Pele after helping his country to win the World Cup in Russian Federation this summer.

Pelé even praised Diego Maradona,"You will ask me", the Brazilian said, "was [Maradona] better than Messi?"

Pele is the only man to win the World Cup three times, hence many regard him as the greatest.

When it comes to comparing Pele and Messi, a huge factor will always be the World Cup. "If you ask me: 'Was he better than Messi?' Yes, he was".

Messi has not started for Argentina since they were knocked out of the World Cup in the Round of 16 by eventual champions France.

"It's hard to defend Neymar for all the things he does beyond playing football".

"Franz Beckenbauer and Johan Cruyff were also excellent players". I talked with him, I told him that in soccer, he's got it.

"You mention several names, but from the last 10 or 15 years, I think Messi's been the most consistent player, without doubt.

I spoke with him and reminded him of his ability", said Pele, who went on to ponder on nascent football stars and French player Kylian Mbappe, among others.
