Later, Musk posted the full video from on board the booster, showing the rocket spiral, then stabilize, then crash sideways into the water.

5 Dec company SpaceX successfully launched and put into orbit the Dragon truck with food and equipment for the global space station.

Wednesday's mission (CRS-16) was initially scheduled to blast off on Tuesday, but was postponed for a day after the mission team found that the mouse food in one of the science experiments had gone mouldy.

"Grid fin hydraulic pump stalled, so Falcon landed just out to sea", CEO Elon Musk said on Twitter.

"The first stage did land in the water", SpaceX spokesperson John Insprucker said during a live webcast.

SpaceX has a contract to ferry American astronauts to the space station as part of what's known as the Commercial Crew program with NASA, but the timeline for the first flights has slipped repeatedly.

He once famously described the disastrous crash of an early Falcon 9 booster as "rapid unscheduled disassembly". Before this 12 times, SpaceX has successfully boosted the booster to the ground.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, which launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base carrying 64 "smallsats", set a record for most satellites strapped to a rocket booster, a stack more than 20 feet tall.

Some space-watchers griped about SpaceX cutting away from the botched landing in their live-stream of the event.

In order to reduce the cost of space transport, SpaceX has incorporated re-usable rockets, which can be reused. Maheen is working on converting her gas-powered Hyundai into an all-electric variant.
