In total, 80 Sears and Kmart stores are on the latest closure list for the iconic retail chain.

Sears announced that it expects to begin liquidation sales at the 80 stores in two weeks. The Sears Auto Center at the location will also be closing in January.

Sears already had announced plans to shutter 182 stores after seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October. Lansing's Sears has dodged another round of closings.

At that time, the company said it would close 142 unprofitable stores.

A hedge fund run by Sears Chairman Eddie Lampert said it submitted a last-minute bid Friday to keep the struggling retailer from being liquidated.

At the time of the filing, it operated about 700 Sears and Kmart stores.

The retailer, for years called Sears, Roebuck & Co. and famous for its massive catalog, boomed in the decades after World War II along with a growing middle class.

Lampert has until Friday afternoon to make that bid official.

Sears told the bankruptcy court it has interest from multiple parties.

Wichita's last Sears department store will soon be closed. Whether Sears chairman Edward Lampert will formally toss his hat in the ring remains to be seen. The Santa Barbara Sears store closure added up to another 72 jobs. The company set Friday as a deadline for bids on its remaining stores in an attempt to avoid the closings.

However, that could change if Sears decides to push back the deadline.

So far US Bankruptcy Court Judge Robert Drain, who is hearing the case, has allowed Sears to proceed with plans to stay in business. There are smaller Sears Hometown stores in many Minnesota communities.
