The world may have just rang in 2019, but Netflix subscribers will be traveling back to 1985 when Stranger Things Season 3 premieres in July.

By the time "Stranger Things 3" begins streaming, it will have been nearly two years since fans were last treated to new episodes, with the most recent run streaming from October 2017.

Netflix took advantage of the New Year's Eve celebration to brilliantly announce the release date for the third season of the critically acclaimed horror TV series Stranger Things. Which means a whole lot of Americans are going to skip their annual fireworks and Brit-bashing to marathon the new series.

New year, new threat from the Upside Down?

"One summer can change everything", the tagline reads.

Earlier this month, a teaser trailer for the third season revealed its episode titles and not much more - but still had fans speculating.

The unusual video announcement features a New Year's Eve countdown video from 1985, complete with VHS tape tracking lines, warped audio and what sounds like Mike yelling Eleven's name at one point.

Just before 2018 ended, Netflix tweeted out another trailer for Stranger Things 3 (the above video is a shortened version from Netflix's YouTube channel).

Set in 1985 in, the show co-stars Winona Ryder and David Harbour.

Despite the new teaser not featuring any new footage from the upcoming season, it does build on a previously released teaser, with Hawkins, Indiana's Channel 5 news station noting that the Times Square broadcast is "Brought to you by: Starcourt Mall".
