"We are asking the president to open up the government".

Nancy Pelosi is poised to be elected as House speaker with the first vote of the new Democratic majority.

Democratic Representative Brad Sherman of California has already introduced articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump in 2017. The political journalist replied unflinchingly: "She'll cut your head off and you won't even know it's bleeding".

"We asked the president to support the bills that we support that will open up government", Schumer said.

Hovering in the background in Washington will be the threat of impeachment, and it is nearly certain that some Democrats will introduce proceedings to remove Trump from office.
